Outfitting SGHT’s Field Team on South Georgia Island

South Georgia Island is now rodent free thanks to a massive eradication effort. Back in 2011 the South Georgia Heritage Trust (SGHT) embarked on a seemingly-impossible task: to rid the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia of every last rat and mouse that had been wrecking havoc on this prime breeding sanctuary for millions of seabirds. These invasive, habitat-destroying, egg-eating predators first hitchhiked to the remote South Atlantic islands aboard whaling and sealing ships some 200 years ago.
