Preparing for Your Trip to Ushuaia

Beware of Luggage Weight Restrictions

Checked baggage weight restrictions vary by airline. Check with your carrier and pack according to the most restrictive allowance to ensure you will not be charged for excess luggage. The airlines tend to be quite strict in this regard. (Some even weigh carry-on luggage and may require you check in your carry-on if over their weight limitations.)

Packing Tips

Pack clothing you can layer, especially if traveling on to Antarctica. Wear comfortable, casual clothes while in Ushuaia (again dressing in layers!) and be sure to wear footwear that is sturdy (rubber soles recommended). The weather can be cold, damp and unpredictable, even during summer. At the least, bring a fleece windproof jacket or rain parka. Warm clothing should be at hand for those visiting the mountains, including the National Park, and for wear in town in the evening.

Be Prepared

Tip #1

Watch your footing while navigating the streets in town as the sidewalks are uneven, the terrain variable and there are some steep hills to navigate.

Tip #2

Be sure to use sunscreen at all times (even on overcast days) and re-apply it throughout the day as directed. Sunglasses, lip balm with an SPF-factor, and a hat are also recommended.

Tip #3

Consider reading a book or two on the region either in advance or while traveling. Our recommendations are noted below. You will also find a couple of small bookstores in Ushuaia, which often have a few English-language books in stock. One of our favorite books is In Patagonia by Bruce Chatwin. A masterpiece of travel, history and adventure. This award-winning book captures the spirit of the land, history, wildlife and people of Patagonia.
